REMEMBER when teenage stars were outspoken, unleashed and prone to making glorious mistakes in public?
Taylor Lautner is not of that generation.
The little dweeb who grew into a muscle-bound hunk between Twilight films one and two is attempting to model his career on smart action guys such as Matt Damon and Tom Cruise – and some reports would have Cruise mentoring the kid, though Lautner says they’ve never really spoken.
Whatever the case, at 19 Lautner has already perfected the art of the interview old pros such as Cruise have down pat – be perfectly polite, say everything is great, but don’t say much about anything at all.
He’s working it like a pro on the business side of things, too – forming a production company called Tailor Made Entertainment with his father Dan.
Their first film is Abduction, which just happens to be Lautner’s first big test as a lead outside playing third-rung Jacob the werewolf in The Twilight Saga.

It’s Lautner on the poster (doing his best mini-Bourne) and it’s Lautner in practically every scene of the movie about a kid, Nathan, who finds a picture of himself as a toddler on a missing-persons website and is forced to go on the run.

“From the very first time I heard the pitch, I knew that I wanted that to be my next movie,” Lautner says. “It’s a great story and character surrounded by action and a lot of exciting things.”
With elements of action, drama, romance (with Lily “Daughter of Phil” Collins) and teen comedy, Abduction is a wide-ranging test of Lautner’s skills – still an unknown quantity given Twilight doesn’t exactly require much stretching.
“It did challenge me as an actor,” he agrees.
“I had a lot of emotional things to do, and then it had the action, it had the romance. It’s a cool mystery. There are a lot of twists and turns while Nathan’s trying to figure out who he is and what’s really going on.”
Lautner can’t decide which was tougher – the emotional or the physical. “Emotionally, right when Nathan discovers he’s not who he thinks he is and his parents aren’t even his parents, it’s kind of difficult. I would try to take a step back and say, ‘OK if I just found this all out today in my real life, what would I do, where would I go from here?’” he says.
“Then on the physical side, there were a lot of really cool stunts that required a lot of training.”
Action would appear to be where a first outing such as Abduction is attempting to position Lautner. But, he says, “I don’t want to do the same thing over and over”.
“An actor’s dream is to be able to challenge themselves to a variety of different roles. This movie made sense for me because it’s completely different to Jacob and the Twilight franchise. Then after this I hope to do something completely different as well.”
After carrying the weight of a film on his own young shoulders – rubbing them at the same time with a rather awesome supporting cast including Jason Isaacs, Sigourney Weaver, Maria Bello, Michael Nyqvist and Alfred Molina – going back to film the final Twilight films had to be something of a comedown, performance-wise.
“I’m used to the Twilight thing by now. I know the books and I know where my character stands – we just wanna bring those books to life for the fans, because that’s exactly what they wanna see. After five movies, it’s a lot easier,” he says.
But the easy days are over – the last instalments, Breaking Dawn parts one and two, have wrapped shooting and will have run their race in cinemas by the end of 2012.
“It’s a little bittersweet,” Lautner says of farewelling the franchise. “It’s a bummer. It was definitely emotional when we finished filming. And now to think that we’re not gonna be going back to film another one is really weird.
“I mean, we are going to be able to promote them for the next year and a half with each other … So it’s sad on that end, but then it’s exciting on the other end that we get to go on and challenge ourselves to do different things.”
Lautner has packed a lot into his teenage years – travelling the world, celebrity romance (Taylor Swift) and an intriguing mentor (Gus Van Sant).
What might he achieve by the time he’s 30?
“It’s different to think of,” he says, shaking his head. “I try and just take it one day at a time and that’s the best way to go about it, because if you had asked me three or four years ago if I thought I’d be sitting in this chair, I’d have said absolutely not. We’ll see.
“A friend of mine once told me, ‘The harder you work, the luckier you get’.
“That definitely applies to my life.”
